In Case You Think Performance Reviews Are Great
Jul 8They’re not. UCLA Prof. Samuel Culbert tells you why performance reviews are “total baloney.”
What’s Hot. What’s Not. Work and Sports Behaviors Edition.
Jun 30There’s a lot to learn from good and bad sportsmanship, just by watching our heroes. Apply this to work and you can get ahead or get left behind.
1. Meeting expectations vs. Not meeting expectations
Thus far, Brazil has met all expectations during the World Cup. Italy, defending champs, didn’t even make it to the second round.
2. Celebrating successes vs. Being a bad winner
Bill Clinton, U.S. President #42, celebrated the U.S.A. World Cup win with the team in the locker room. And then there’s Michael Phelps.
3. Being gracious vs. Being crude
Armando Galarraga, a Detroit Tigers pitcher, was denied the 21st perfect game in history, but still got a prize. On the other hand, Serena Williams freaked out at the U.S. Open.
4. Trying your hardest vs. Cheating to get ahead
John Isner and Nicholas Mahut played the longest match in tennis history at Wimbledon. Derossi, #6 of the Italian World Cup team, falls to the field and faked a foul during the World Cup while playing Paraguay.

Ever Have to Write Your Own Performance Review?

It’s mid-year, so guess what, kids? HR is sending out notes saying it’s time for Mid-Year Reviews! (HR likes to use exclamation points a lot.)
Do you have to write your own review? Ever think that’s a little odd? (As if having one adult pretend that they’re giving you an objective review of your behavior isn’t weird enough.)
iRate: IFRACTAL’s New Android App
May 6Your last performance review rating probably seemed as random as rolling the dice.
So we decided to make an app for that.
We released yesterday a free application for the Android called iRate. It’s a performance review generator that rates you as randomly as your boss does.
Here’s how it works. You shake or tap the screen, then a randomly generated performance review appears. They range from the vague to the downright ridiculous. But chances are, whatever you get from iRate will be more accurate than you one you actually got.
If you’ve got an Android, you can get iRate today. Here’s how to find it:
1. Start the Market application in your phone.
2. Search for iRate.
3. Install it.
We’ve already written a lot of performance reviews for the app, but this is only version 1.0. Now we need your help. Share with us your ideas for random performance reviews. Just a sentence or two will do. Post your ideas in the comments section below, then check out what you wrote in the next version.
Here are some examples:
Clever, witty or even a haiku will do. The more fun, the better. After all, using performance reviews to communicate is about as smart as using a banana to hammer a nail.
