HR Gardening Tip of the Day: The Best Time to Plant a Tree

The best time to plant a tree is 10 years ago.

Do you ever find your staffing plan lacking a certain je ne sais quoi while you say to yourself, “We should have done something about that a long time ago”? That’s parallel in gardening to the question of when you should plant a tree. Get going. Plant an idea today and be amazed at your wisdom 10 years from now. It happens in a blink.

CareerTV Show Launches in April

I got a note from the folks at CareerTV announcing their new offering. I’ve thought these giys were interesting and modern in their approach to promote employer brands to potential hires on college campuses. Here’s what they said:

San Francisco, CA, April 9, 2008. - The “CareerTV Top Diversity Employers” episode hit air with features of Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, the US Department of State, and PricewaterhouseCoopers. The show is broadcasting now and available on over 50 college campuses nationwide on cable, video on demand, and closed circuit TV. Full shows and segments are also available online at CareerTV.com.

Executive Producer, Sean O’Grady, explains, “Every company is going to claim that it embraces diversity, but with this show, we took a look under the hood of major employers to find out what they are really doing to create diverse environments.”

The show features advice from Frank K. Ross, the first African American to be named Partner at a major accounting firm, and from actor Tom Hanks. The episode also features career experts answering user generated questions. Drexel University Career Services Director, Peter Franks, handled a volley of questions from students around the nation in the popular “Mail Call,” segment.

Walking the Career Tightrope

It’s Monday morning. What are your people thinking about on their way to work? Their to-do list? Their grocery list? The career tightrope they walk on every day?

People need a career that with a safety net. Otherwise, why take risk? Sure, some may be foolhardy, but most of us just want to do well and not fall. Few of us are as talented in career tightrope walking as the guy in the video.

To Thine Own Self Be True

Gary Vaynerchuk has the most successful wine show on the internet called Wine Library TV. If you watch a single episode you’ll get a sense of why. In addition to being an oenophile, Gary’s also a street philosopher.

In this episode of his personal video show, he talks about being true to yourself. There’s a lesson embedded in there. Gary uses “stop lying to yourself” as a strong way to make a point. And that is, know what gets your motor running. Know what jazzes you up. Know what gets you in gear. For Gary, it’s wine. And because he followed his bliss, he turned his small family wine business from a 4-employee operation last year to over a 100-employee operation this year. How? Passion. And knowing what he’s good at.

This one’s for everyone who thinks he’s stuck in some dead-end job. Maybe you’re right. But are you doing the thing that can make you a superstar in your own right?
