Crazy HR Codes
Mar 31
Those of us who live in the Philadelphia have a particular love-hate (well, more of the latter than the former) feeling about SEPTA — Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority. Ask anyone around here and they have a train, bus or trolley horror story.
That’s why I cracked up when I read SEPTAfail Blog’s story on Twitter about a national company in the area that has an HR code for SEPTA tardiness. Yep, our public transportation system in the City of Brotherly Love is so unpredictable that there’s a special code for being Late-by-SEPTA.
That’s one of the funnier HR codes I’ve ever heard of. What crazy HR codes have you heard of that rival this one?

A company I worked at in Indiana had a “basketball” attendance exception which excused employees with children who missed wotk for the local high school games, and for overtime on weekends when the Hoosier basketball team played.
This was in the Bob Knight era.
I also once had a grievance filed by a union because of a decision made by Bob Knight, but that is a different topic.
Michael, that one makes me laugh. Makes sense in Indiana, where every kid is born with a basketball in their hand.
I don’t have crazy codes but I will say that the numbering system that the company I work for uses in SAP has no rhyme or reason… and I must say that for all the good press that SAP gets, I think their interface and program are not intuitive AT ALL and a pain to use. Sorry for the rant but you got me going…
