HR Gardening Tip of the Day: The Best Time to Plant a Tree
Posted on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 by Frank Roche
The best time to plant a tree is 10 years ago.
Do you ever find your staffing plan lacking a certain je ne sais quoi while you say to yourself, “We should have done something about that a long time ago”? That’s parallel in gardening to the question of when you should plant a tree. Get going. Plant an idea today and be amazed at your wisdom 10 years from now. It happens in a blink.

True wisdom. The pace of change in the world is accelerating and you needs to think about what you want now if you are to be prepared to take it in the future.
You need to be ready for that moment when 2 friends go for a short walk and the next thing you know you are quitting your corporate job and starting your own company.

Bill, it’s a derivative of your story about “that’s what I pay you for” and the decisions that you have to make in HR. Good decisions now have effects for years.

Rick, that is too funny. It’s been almost 5 years…and I planted that tree well more than 10 years before that.

I make planning and investing in the future of my business a priority. I only wish I would have learned that lesson 10 years ago. Ironic isn’t it.
