Welcome to New KnowHR Subscribers

Hello, new subscribers. I got alert after alert yesterday saying, “You have a new e-mail subscriber.” I don’t know what happened yesterday, but many of you decided to give KnowHR a spin. Thanks very much for that. If you’re new to KnowHR, here’s a few articles that bring in a lot of traffic:

Top 10 Best Presentations Ever. This one still gets a thousand or so visits a day more than 18 months after it was written. My favorite “presentation” is from My Best Friend’s Wedding.

Women Make Less Than Men: 5 Things HR Needs to Do Right Now To End Pay Inequality. It’s just not right, and this was a bit of a rant…with some solutions offered.

10 Ways to Know When It’s Time to Get Out of HR. Snatch the pebble from my hand, Grasshopper. We’ve gotten lots of comments about this one.

Anwyays, drop me a note if you want. I’ll write back. Glad to have you here.

To Thine Own Self Be True

Gary Vaynerchuk has the most successful wine show on the internet called Wine Library TV. If you watch a single episode you’ll get a sense of why. In addition to being an oenophile, Gary’s also a street philosopher.

In this episode of his personal video show, he talks about being true to yourself. There’s a lesson embedded in there. Gary uses “stop lying to yourself” as a strong way to make a point. And that is, know what gets your motor running. Know what jazzes you up. Know what gets you in gear. For Gary, it’s wine. And because he followed his bliss, he turned his small family wine business from a 4-employee operation last year to over a 100-employee operation this year. How? Passion. And knowing what he’s good at.

This one’s for everyone who thinks he’s stuck in some dead-end job. Maybe you’re right. But are you doing the thing that can make you a superstar in your own right?

You Can Fly Without ID

For all you harried HR generalists out there who are waiting in security lines at airports around the country — put away your IDs. Or at least the next time you travel, know that you can get through security lines faster without ID. Here’s how.

(Um, there’s no law that says you have to have ID to fly on U.S. airplanes. They just started asking and we complied. “Surely you can’t be serious. I am serious, and don’t call me Shirley.”)

Excessive Exec Pay = Chance for Malfeasance?

Sarah forwarded and article to me yesterday titled “Correlation Between Executive Pay and Fraud?” Interesting academic analysis. I’m going to look much more into this. Just brining it to your attention. (NB: I’m Mr. I Am Skeptical About The Chance for False Correlations.)

Fistful of Talent Launched

Kris Dunn launched Fistful of Talent yesterday. Besides having one of the coolest names in blogdom, it’s gonna be really great, as readers of Kris’s The HR Capitalist know. Here’s the description:

Alrighty then - I’ve been working on the concept for a new blog, and this is it. FISTFUL OF TALENT is the name, and we’re covering all things related to Talent in your organization, from how you get it (recruiting) to what you do with it once you have it (which includes everything from onboarding, organizational effectiveness, performance management, succession planning, employment branding, the holy grail of engagement, motivation and incentives, and more).

It’s going to be a group effort, with lots of talented people adding to the conversation. Add Fistful of Talent to your daily reads. It’s already in my Google Reader and in my sidebar. Congrats, Kris.
