HR Advice: Overdeliver

Posted on Monday, January 7, 2008 by Frank Roche

From a really great (and short) article by Seth Godin called Making Promises:

If you need to overpromise to make the sale, don’t bother. It’s not worth it.

The best way to generate word of mouth is simple: overdeliver.

This is always good advice. But when you’re in the people business, it goes times 100.

I like Steve Martin’s version of the same advice. When asked how to get ahead, he says, “Be so good they have to ask you back.”

I hadn’t heard that one, Wally. But it’s brilliant. I love Steve Martin. I was at a formative time when he was A Wild and Crazy Guy. I saw him in concert 10 times. He proved his advice to be true.
