Jerk Free Jobs

Sep 6

Asher Adelman of eBossWatch gave me a call to tell me about their new jerk-free jobs listing board. Very interesting concept: Working at companies with a respectful culture. Here’s a description from the Great Workplace Jobs Board:

eBossWatch features jobs at jerk-free companies so that job-seekers won’t have to worry about applying to companies with abusive or toxic bosses.

Our job board is limited to those companies that have been certified as great workplaces. The companies listed here on eBossWatch understand how to treat their employees and how to maintain a positive and productive work environment.

Working in a great environment seems even more important now. Bob Sutton continues to beat the drum to drum terrible managers out of companies. Check out his most most recent post that shows that 37% of workers get bullied.

While there are boss “jerks” out there – I have to wonder how often it’s simply a communication problem, behavior difference or misperception issue on the part of the employee.

I’ve seen situations where the boss got the “you know what” beat out of them in a 360 review by people who hated their lives and their jobs. It actually had NOTHING to do with their boss and everything to do with the work these people hated doing. Yet people stay in jobs they can’t stand because they are paid to well to leave.

So they stay and blame their unhappiness on the “boss from hell”.

    We have a saying…

“Job – Me Conflict” always leads to “You – Me Conflict.

    Love your blog!

Chris, really great point about hating the job versus hating the boss. Big difference. Realy cool phrase you use. I like that. Thanks for the kind words…and back at ya!

Ignorance as to what constitutes abuse of power in no way condones it, and indifference to it when within one’s realm of influence, does not exempt culpability. I encourage all to get educated and get real. Although targets of workplace bullying suffer the same post-traumatic disorders as POW’s, it is the POW who is prisoner in the truest sense and should be acknowledged accordingly for what is endured in the name of freedom. Initially, as a target, it is okay and perhaps commendable to sway tactfully and judiciously these bullies, in the hopes to one day reign victorious in the good cause of truth and justice. Unfortunately, the reality is as such, that the right to work with one’s dignity intact is dearly lacking in many a workplace. There is no glory in staying with an employer after all reasonable avenues have been exhausted and, yet, the assaults continue. When the people in authority turn a deaf ear to one of their own, a crossroads has been reached and a decision must be made. Shall a spouse return to an abuser? A dog to his own vomit? Fight the good fight, and rally for the Healthy Workplace Bill, so that all bullies are held accountable.

These stories can go both ways. For instance: I had a creepy boss who kept asking me out. Eventually, I was fired. When potential employers called for references, he trashed me.
I went to an attorney who referred me to a company who uses Certified Court Reporters to document what your past employer tells potential employers.
BUSTED! My creepy supervisor was fired by HR and they paid my wages during the time I was out of work.
So, HR was very nice, once I had proof. I didn’t sue, because I thought HR handled everything very professionally.
