I think companies have a lot to gain from hiring people from non-traditional backgrounds. I don't know that college is the only way to learn things. But companies want to lower their risks, and having a diploma often means that a person spent four years applying themself. (I know, it can be highly deluded.) I like the idea of high school grads who show initiative...and can do the job...that's the trick. Jinnyn, I agree.
