Why is Money Not Motivating to Employees, But it is to Managers?

Thought I had over coffee this morning:

Why is it that the same managers who use “people don’t work for money” to justify underpaying workers are convinced that their own bonus and long-term incentive plans are great and highly motivating?

What a wonderful double standard!! It is quite thought provoking…

I find that this phenomenon happens in my realm when managers are being rewarded for keeping their staff costs within budget.

Yvette, it’s one of those things that’s a funny contrast — we believe that money doesn’t motivate others but it works for us. That bonus plan you talk about is a scary one. Hmmmm, says me.
