HR Consulting or Corporate: Which is the Right Career Move for You?

Posted on Saturday, May 5, 2007 by Frank Roche

Bill Strahan and I are giving a talk tomorrow at the WorldatWork Total Rewards 2007 Annual Conference. We were told by the organizers that we have a big crowd coming to hear us talk about HR career choices. Here’s what the conference program says we’re going to talk about:

Consulting or Corporate: Which Is the Best HR Career Move for You?
Workshop Code: O02S2

Sometimes HR careers happen by circumstance rather than by choice. There are pros and cons to being a consultant, as well as to being a practitioner. Frank Roche and William Strahan use information from an extensive survey of HR professionals, coupled with real-life experience in corporate and HR consulting roles to share with participants how to make decisions and take action on their HR careers. Participants learn how to evaluate their passions through an interactive quiz and how to make their skills shine.

Focus Level: Strategic/Tactical—30/70

Frank Roche, Partner, iFractal
William Strahan, Vice President Compensation & Benefits, Comcast

If you’re in Orlando at the conference, and Disney World isn’t too alluring from 2:30 to 4:00 pm tomorrow, come over and say hello. We’ll be doing an interactive quiz that should be fun. Not to worry, though, I’ll post the quiz here tomorrow afternoon for those of you who are saying hi to Mickey Mouse.

I’d have enjoyed that debate Frank. For me, as you know, there is no contest, but as with most things it is down to personal preferance. Corporate roles give you stability (sometimes!), and perhaps what I do really miss, the opportunity to see your efforts from the start to the end! Consulting gives you the flexibility, variety and challenge which I thrive on. Disney World, no contest!

    Hi Scott,

It is a personal preference…and a certain skill set…the selling part in consulting can be daunting to some…I really did go to Disney World, btw…I even went in It’s a Small World…oldest one in there without a kid.

One can argue whether or not a kid was at Disney World when you walked in.
