Mind If I Give You a Little Feedback?
Posted on Thursday, December 14, 2006 by Frank RocheSeth Godin has some thoughts on giving feedback. My favorite: do analysis, not criticism.
(Side story: A long while ago I worked at a consulting firm that had a mantra of “benefit of the doubt” for interactions among associates. Part of that process included giving “feedback” prefaced by saying, “Benefit of the doubt” and followed by “Mind if I give you some feedback?” After a while there I realized that the word “feedback” didn’t exactly get used when someone wanted to give you a compliment. So, each time I would hear, “Mind if I give you some feedback”? I would give the same response: “Hey, if you want to criticize me go ahead, but you don’t have to call it ‘feedback’”.)
