Let My People Vote

Posted on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 by Frank Roche

It’s Election Day in America. Does your company have a policy about time off for voting? Do you encourage your employees to vote or do you “give” them the time off? Here are the state-by-state rules. Now get out there and vote. I’m heading to my polling place in suburban Philadelphia right this minute.

If you ever wondered why Election Day is on a Tuesday in the U.S., it’s because of an act of Congress in 1845. That’s the 1845 where only “freemen” were allowed to vote. I wonder with our 50% turnout why we just don’t change Election Day to a weekend over two days. Hmmmm. BTW: Donald Glade at Systematic HR does a nice job off summarizing the issues that affect HR in this election.
