Job Hunting Goes Viral
Sep 22An October 2006 article in Business 2.0 titled A MySpace for Job Seekers (link not yet available) is about a big idea: Using the best people to find the best people. And paying them for it. In effect, you could say that job hunting has gone viral. Paul Kaihla writes about Blue Chip Expert and the move to viral job hunting:
Blue Chip focuses on free agents, the roughly 12 million contract workers in the United States… [snip] Langmack wants a lock on the high end – software engineers, creative directors, consultants. “The cream of the workforce never posts resumes on the big job boards,” Langmack says, which is why companies have hard times finding them.
The cool kids hang out with the cool kids. That’s the way it was in high school, and that’s the way it is in business. Find the “cool kids,” recruit their friends. Blue Chip Expert (BCE) says:
The world needs a place where the best will gather…the best need a reason to gather in one place.
It’ll be interesting to see how it goes. Business 2.0 called the BCE “MySpace for job seekers.” With the pay model they use, I would say it’s also a bit of Amway meets LinkedIn. Regardless of how you frame it, in the job market “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know” still counts.
