How Employees See CEOs

Posted on Friday, September 22, 2006 by Frank Roche

Oprah Winfrey is on a road trip with her friend Gayle. In this video, called “Oprah Pumps Her Own Gas,” we find out that Oprah hasn’t pumped gas since 1983, and that she doesn’t know how to do it in 2006. And that made me think about how employees see CEOs. Sure, CEOs pull on their hand-tailored Saville Row trousers one leg at a time, just like everyone else. But they can lack a little bit in the credibility department when they are seen as silver-spooners who have lost touch with the price of a loaf of bread and how to pump gas. That’s something to think about you’re communicating with employees. Perception is reality.
